Is Your Garden Parasol Large Enough?

Wednesday October 7, 2009

We all hanker for those really sunny days of summer that seem to go on forever. But although we might love the sun we need to be conscious of getting burnt as well. Sunburn is not pleasant and if we get caught out we can suffer the consequences long after the sun has gone down.

That means we need to be properly prepared, and one way to do that is to make sure we have the right garden parasol for our needs.

It can be tempting to buy a cheap garden parasol but if you do you run the risk of having one that is unsuitable. You see, they don’t come in standard diameters, and that means you need to get one that is big enough to cover the whole of your garden table. It also needs to cover the people who are sitting around it.

There is nothing worse than having to constantly move your parasol around – or your garden chair – in order to remain underneath it. So try and get the biggest parasol that your table will support.

Obviously if you have a small two seater bistro set you won’t need a huge parasol. You will both be able to sit comfortably underneath a smaller one. But if you have an eight seater table to sit round it is obvious that you will need a much bigger parasol to make sure everyone is settled in the shade.

As you can see it is definitely worth buying the best parasol you can afford. You can also minimise the need to move it around by watching to see where the sun falls in your garden. If your garden is south facing then you will get the best of the sun all day long. But if you face in another direction then the need to position your parasol just right won’t be as important.

The best way to ensure you get it just right is to experiment with the positioning on the sunniest day you can. If you can find that one position where you won’t have to move it at all, then you can sit back and relax and just enjoy being safe in the shade. The last thing you want is to have to get up and move the parasol just when you have reached a good place in your book!

Of course a larger parasol will need that bit more room to be stored away safely when it isn’t being used. But don’t let that put you off buying a large one. Your protection – and that of your family – is the number one priority, and you can always lay your parasol down along the floor or tuck it away in the shed if need be.

So if you are thinking of buying a new garden parasol, make sure you get the largest one you can. You won’t regret it, and it will give you much more vital shade just when you need it the most.
